Sheboygan and Tsubame are celebrating 25 years of Sister City status. The local library will have a special exhibition to show cultural items, such as toys, kimonos and artwork.

Sheboygan's mayor celebrates "a remarkable connection" with Tsubame. He says the relationship improves Sheboygan's community and helps cultural understanding. “The exhibit at Mead Library, celebrating 25 years of partnership, beautifully showcases Japanese culture, education, entertainment, art, and much more. We’re excited to continue to strengthen our partnership with Tsubame for the future.” said Sarah Engel-Streicher. The display is open to the public until the 28th of March.

A staff member on the Mayors International Committee, Alexandria King-Close visited Tsubame in 2005 as a high school student. She loved "the welcoming warmth" of her Japanese hosts.

Sheboygan music teacher Katy Ries also helps foster close ties with Tsubame through pen-pal partnerships and musical exchanges. "Students have been learning about Japanese culture and building friendships across continents." She adds "Sharing the joy of learning about Japanese culture with my students has been exciting. We loved sending artwork and letters to Japan and loved receiving their artwork and letters back even more. It has been a wonderful experience to connect with people on the other side of the world."

4 exchange students will travel to Sheboygan in autumn. It is hoped that "will further strengthen the bond between our two cities and provide an enriching experience for all involved."

There will also be a free showing of Totoro at Mead Library’s Movie Night at 5:30pm on Wednesday, April 24th.

Thanks was expressed to staff members who helped with the sister city relationship and also the library display. Sheboygan also holds sister city status with Esslingen in Germany.
