Do I need English?

Some of my students have answered the question “Do you think you need to study English?” and I was pleased by most of the answers. But some said they don’t want to or need to study English…

First, my situation was very similar when I was in school. I thought it wasn’t important for me to study German when I was in school. When will I use German?, I thought.

I had to eat my words as I ended up studying German at university and living in Germany and Austria almost 20 years later. That is when I will use German!

      To my students, I want to say, you don’t know what will come in the future. You may want to travel when you are older. You may develop a love for another language. You may find you need some English for your dream job (international companies, computer programmers, Japanese companies that sell overseas, to name just a few examples).

      Language learning also helps your brain. It helps develop your memory and brain function. It helps your ability to multitask.

      Please think about the future. English may be the thing that you don’t know you need in the future…
