Japan has dropped 5 places in the Education First (EF) country ranking for English ability. EF is a Swiss international education company.

Japan is below China (91st) and just above Myanmar (93rd), Palestine (94th) and Afghanstan (95th). EF tested 2.1 million adults to make the list.

The Netherlands was top, followed by Norway and Singapore. Most of the top 50 countries are European countries. English education in Europe is generally excellent. In some schools across Europe other classes are taught in English too (for example geography or history lessons might be in English). In the Netherlands, Students must receive 55% in their final English tests or they can't graduate from high school. Most university masters degrees are taught in English.

Japan’s English education apparently hasn’t changed but many of the other countries close to Japan have made improvements and so Japan has slipped down.

Japan’s position has declined every year since the list started in 2011. There are so many things that the Japan education system can do to improve, but there seems the lack of willingness to change.
