Leonard Ewbank borrowed a book from St Bees School on 25th September 1911. He forgot to return it then went to study at Oxford. In 1915 he joined the army to fight in the first world war. He was killed in Ypres Belgium in early in 1916…
The book is a book of Byron’s poems. Byron (pictured above) was a famous British poet who died in 1824.
The school said they were “honoured” to have the book back. “It’s incredible to think that a piece of St Bees’ history has found its way back to us after all these year.” St Bees is a 430 year old school. Rowan Atkinson who played Mr Bean is a former pupil at that school.
Have you ever forgotten to return a library book? Once I found a book that I had forgotten. It was 15 years overdue! In the UK, you often have to pay a fine for returning late books!
