Onigiri have been popular in Japan forever. But did you know that they are becoming popular outside of Japan too?!
Onigiri are perfect for eating on the go or for a quick and easy lunch. They are small rice balls, sometimes stuffed with chicken, pork, vegetables or fish and wrapped in nori (seaweed). It makes sense that they would become popular in the West. It is common for people to eat while they walk through town or grab a quick bite on the way somewhere. Onigiri are a popular food with tourists in Japan as they are cheap, easy to eat and have a great Japanese taste!
Parami is a restaurant that serves onigiri in Sydney, Australia. It is run by Mika Kazato. Her team make up to 500 onigiri a day! They sell them with cups of coffee or matcha.
Paris has more than 50 onigiri shops and many supermarkets have started to sell them too! The French judoka Luka Mkheidze says they "are like fuel for the body. They give me energy so I can perform."
Do you like onigiri? What is your favourite? How often do you eat onigiri?
